Notice to Health secretary of India on NCD and FOPL by #NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took cognisance of a petition filed by Shruti Nagvanshi, Convenor Savitri Bai Phule Women Forum (SWF), and Shirin Shabana Khan, Programme Director Peoples’ Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) on September 19, the NHRC sent a notice to the Health Secretary, Government of India, seeking a response within four weeks. The matter would be placed before the full commission of NHRC, something that rarely happens.
Interim order as follows:
The Commission has received a Complaint dated 14.09.2021 from Ms Shruti Nagvanshi and Shirin Shabana Khan resident of Varanasi, Up alleging that Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in India. The packaged food is high in salt, fat and sugar which poses major risk factors for Obesity and NCDs. The Petitioner has prayed for intervention by the Commission for implementation of Nutrient Profile Model and Front of Packet Labeling (FOPL) regulation in India as it will help the food processing Industry towards healthy food.
The Commission has considered the matter. The issue raised by the Petitioner is directly related to the Right to Life and Right to Health in particular. Such types of issues related to human rights are taken seriously by the Commission. Let a Notice be sent to the Secretary, Ministry of Health, Govt .of India calling for report in 4 Weeks.
The matter thereafter be placed before the Full Commission.
