 On 11 November, 2021 PVCHR received email from Harika Raj Technical Officer, Regulatory Compliance Division Food Safety and Standards Authority of India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Govt. of India in Public Grievance Petition No. PMOPG/D/2021/0234611 dated 24/09/2021. 






Dear Sir/Madam,

 

This is with reference to your Grievance Petition No. PMOPG/D/2021/0234611  dated 24/09/2021.


Your suggestions are welcome and have been noted.


I am directed to inform that FSSAI had drafted notified the FOPL provisions under the draft FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations. the same was under discussion with various stakeholders including industry associations and consumer organisations . Subsequently, FSSAI has signed an MOU with IIM - Ahmedabad to undertake a survey based study on evaluation of FOPL choices among Indian population . The findings of the survey are awaited.


Besides, for school children , FSSAI has notified Food Safety and Standards (Safe food and balanced diets for children in school) Regulations in order to ensure availability of balanced and healthy diets for school children.

Update on NHRC Case: FSSAI Ordered to Submit Additional Information on Packaged Food and NCDs

  Today, we saw on the NHRC website (Track Case number:  4227/90/0/2021 ) that on March 21, 2024, the honorable commission called for additional information from the Joint Director of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Science and Standards (S&S) Division. The proceeding of the order is as follows: Background of the Complaint The complainants, via a complaint dated September 14, 2021, alleged that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in India. They pointed out that packaged food high in salt, fat, and sugar poses significant risk factors for obesity and NCDs. Initial Commission Action Upon consideration of the matter on May 31, 2023, the Commission directed that the recommendations made by the scientific panel, as well as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, be sent to the Director, Regulatory Compliance Division, FSSAI, New Delhi. Addressing the Public Health Crisis: Rising Non-Communicable Diseases in India

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India has reached alarming levels, posing a severe public health crisis. Recent data and studies highlight the urgent need for effective measures to combat these diseases. The Grim Statistics NCD Mortality : Nearly 58 lakh people in India die from NCDs each year out of nearly 90 lakh overall deaths. Childhood Nutrition and Obesity : According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5-2021), under-nutrition in children remains stagnant, with one in three children affected.
