The complaint was filed to the National Human Rights
Commission (NHRC) from Ms Shruti Nagvanshi and Shirin Shabana Khan, resident
of Varanasi, U.P., alleging that Non-Communicable
Diseases (NCDs) are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in India. The
packaged food is high in salt, fat and sugar which poses major risk factors
for obesity and NCDs. The petitioners have prayed for intervention by the
Commission for implementation of Nutrient Profile Model and Front of Packet
Labeling (FOPL) regulation in India as it will help the food processing

The Commission took cognizance of the complaint and sought
a report in the matter from Secretary, Ministry of Health, Govt. of India and
in response, Under Secretary, Food Regulation Section, Ministry of Health
& Family Welfare, Govt. of India endorsed a copy of letter dated
20.10.2021 addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and
Standards Authority of India, New Delhi requesting to submit the requisite
reply in the matter to NHRC. |
