भारतीय खाद्य उद्योग फ़्रंट पैक पर चेतावनी लेबल के लिए है तैयार
15 अगस्त 2022, अल्ट्रा-प्रोसेस्ड डिब्बाबंद खाद्य पदार्थों की खपत में आशातीत वृद्धि के साथ, भारत विज्ञान समर्थित फ्रंट ऑफ पैक लेबलिंग (एफओपीएल) को अपनाने के दिशा में अग्रसर है। प्रमुख उद्योग प्रतिनिधियों और खाद्य उत्पाद निर्माताओं का मानना है, कि वैश्विक बाजार में छोटे और मझोले औद्योगिक (एसएमई) इकाइयों द्वारा उत्पादित खाद्य पदार्थों की बढ़ती लोकप्रियता भारत के परंपरागत खाद्य पदार्थ, जो सेहतमंद भी है, के निर्यात में वृद्धि के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम साबित हो सकता है। निर्यात को बढ़ाने की दृष्टि से, इस अवसर को मजबूत और निर्यात क्षमता को सुविधाजनक बनाने के लिए, खाद्य उत्पादों के लिए चेतावनी लेबल आधारित एफओपीएल को अपनाना, भारत के लिए एक प्रभावी नीतिगत फैसला होगा।
Representative from food industry supports mandatory warning label FOPL
15 th August 2022: With consumption of ultra-processed packaged foods soaring to unprecedented levels, India is prioritizing the adoption of a science backed Front of Pack Labeling (FOPL). leading industry representatives and food manufacturers believe that a global best practice FOPL would be a major boost for increasing exports of packaged food products especially those produced by MSME units in the global market.
Full recognition of the need to embrace global best practice FOPL to make Indian food at par with food in the global market, Dr. Girish Gupta, National President, Food Industries Welfare Association (FIWA), said, “FOPL will significantly help food processing industry in the country as market or demand shift toward healthy food, this will be unique opportunity created in the India which help leapfrogging Indian food processing industry and attract more foreign investment.”
India has one of the highest growth rates for ultra-processed food and beverages – items high in added sugar, salt and additives, besides being ultra-processed. According to Euromonitor sales data from 2006-2019, the retail value of packaged junk food and soft drinks in India grew by 42 times in just 13 years. The food processing industry, which the Govt of India encourages as a major sector for employment generation, is currently worth $ 200 billion and expected to grow to $ 500 billion. With 32% of the Indian food market covered by the ‘processing industry,’ the massive MSME sector manufacturing delectable and highly popular desi snacks and confectionery, is a key driver of this exponential growth. Government is incentivizing food parks for utilization of processing industry potential and also has an eye on enhancing the export of processed foods. The Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industries (PLISFPI) with a fiscal outlay of Rs. 10900 crores, encourages global standard food manufacturing companies in India and supports Indian food brands for export in the international market.
“India can become a trend setter if it goes ahead and adopts ‘high in’ style warning labels as suggested by AIIMS, should be chosen as the label design on the front of food packets to provide clear information about nutrients such as fat, sugar or salt,” Said Mr Ramakant Jaiswal from Vaypari Ekta Partinidhi Mandal.
India sees an alarming rise of diet related diseases not only among adults but also a sharp increase in childhood obesity. Indian consumers will spend $ 6 trillion by 2030 on processed and branded food products. With ultra-processed food taking over the dietary preferences and buying decisions of consumers, the food industry is taking cognizance of the critical role that powerful and simple to understand warnings on food packets, can play.
Affirming industry’s readiness support, Mr Ankur Sighal, National President of Bhartiya Vyapar Mandal , said, “We welcome the idea of a strong FOPL that will help consumers quickly understand and identify healthy foods. Because this initiative will not only boost business but millions of consumers of the country will get health benefits, which will reduce non-communicable diseases.”
Dr. Lenin Raghuvanshi from PVCHR, said, ``As India observes “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav – celebrating 75 years of independence”, food safety, nutrition and the nation’s health are emerging as top concerns. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is deliberating on a much-awaited FOPL regulation for India. While FSSAI has expressed a preference for ‘health stars rating’ which experts say would be misleading for consumers, doctors and scientific communities say that India should adopt ‘warning labels’ - the global best standard, not just for its staggering disease burden, but also to ensure its exponentially growing food market is ready for a healthier future.
The Indian food industry, who are the key stakeholders, are ready to adopt a label that is consumer friendly and best for the country, that can help families make healthier choices while we increase profits and jobs in our industry.
