Meeting in National Human Rights Commission (#NHRC)

 

On 23rd June, 2023 a delegation from Peoples’ Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) met with Shri Surajit Dey jee, Registrar of the National Human Rights Commission (#NHRC) about warning label #FOPL for ultra- processed foods in context of health of children, youths and women. It is a way to curb down Non communicable diseases (NCDs).

Patna Declaration: Uniting Political Parties for Children's Health

  On February 7, 2024, in Patna , a significant public dialogue took place at the Kasturba Gandhi Assembly Hall within the premises of the Gandhi Museum. The event, which saw participation from 85 individuals, was organized by a coalition consisting of the Peoples’ Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), People’s Initiative for Participatory Action for Food Labelling (PIPAL), All India Hawkers Forum, Bandi Adhikar Andolan, and Indian Roti Bank. The primary focus of this gathering was to advocate for "Warning label Front-of-Package Labeling" as a means to address the rising concerns of non-communicable diseases, malnutrition, and obesity. Update on NHRC Case: FSSAI Ordered to Submit Additional Information on Packaged Food and NCDs

  Today, we saw on the NHRC website (Track Case number:  4227/90/0/2021 ) that on March 21, 2024, the honorable commission called for additional information from the Joint Director of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Science and Standards (S&S) Division. The proceeding of the order is as follows: Background of the Complaint The complainants, via a complaint dated September 14, 2021, alleged that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in India. They pointed out that packaged food high in salt, fat, and sugar poses significant risk factors for obesity and NCDs. Initial Commission Action Upon consideration of the matter on May 31, 2023, the Commission directed that the recommendations made by the scientific panel, as well as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, be sent to the Director, Regulatory Compliance Division, FSSAI, New Delhi.
