I am pleased to update you on the significant progress we've made in addressing the escalating crisis of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India. This advancement would not have been possible without your invaluable mentorship and unwavering support.

On August 8, 2024, Shruti Nagvanshi and Shirin Shabana Khan once again approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding the public health emergency posed by NCDs, emphasizing crucial statistics and the pressing need for regulatory measures. In response, the NHRC has taken significant action, engaging with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and other authorities to advocate for the implementation of Front-of-Package Warning Labels (FOPL). These labels are crucial in mitigating the risks associated with high levels of salt, sugar, and fat in packaged foods, which are known contributors to obesity and NCDs in India.

Key Actions Taken by the NHRC:

  • Action 8: Additional Information Called For
    Date: 09/07/2024
Authority: Joint Director, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Science and Standards Division
In the initial complaint dated 14/09/2021, it was highlighted that NCDs are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in India. Despite earlier proceedings on 31/05/2023 requesting recommendations from an expert panel, as of 09/07/2024, no report had been submitted. This prompted the NHRC to issue a reminder to FSSAI for a report within four weeks.

  • Action 9: Additional Information Called For
    Date: 29/08/2024
A similar follow-up was issued, given that no report had been received by the set deadline, prompting another reminder to the Joint Director, FSSAI.

These actions represent a strong step forward in advocating for greater accountability and transparency in regulating food safety, particularly to address the growing burden of NCDs in India.

Moving Forward:

We remain committed to systemic changes to promote health equity and create a healthier future for all Indians. Our continued collaboration with the NHRC and FSSAI is vital in achieving this goal, aligned with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of a healthier India.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to drive progress in public health.
