When Kashi Raised Its Voice: A Call for Warning Labels on Packaged Foods
A public-health appeal from Kashi in 2022 for healthier food choices and a healthier future
Health cannot be protected only through hospitals and medicines. What we eat every day—particularly the packaged and ultra-processed foods increasingly consumed by children and young people—is also a major public-health concern.
In September 2022, two religious and social organisations from Kashi, Varanasi, separately wrote to the Prime Minister of India raising concerns about packaged food and calling for stronger consumer information and warning labels.
A Call from Vishva Hindu Parishad, Kashi
On 28 September 2022, Anurag Trivedi, President of Vishva Hindu Parishad, Kashi Mahanagar (North District), addressed a letter to the Prime Minister concerning the growing health risks associated with unhealthy food.
The letter specifically highlighted the importance of introducing Front-of-Pack Labelling (FOPL) on packaged foods containing excessive levels of salt, sugar and fat.
It expressed concern about the growing risks of heart disease among young people and pointed to the broader health consequences associated with unhealthy diets.
The central message was straightforward: when consumers purchase packaged food, they should be able to see, immediately and clearly, whether the product contains excessive amounts of sugar, salt or fat.
The letter therefore called for mandatory front-of-pack warnings so that consumers could make informed decisions at the point of purchase.
A Similar Appeal from Patalpuri Math
On 27 September 2022, Mahant Balak Das, Peethadhishwar of Patalpuri Math, Varanasi, through the Patalpuri Sanatan Dharm Raksha Parishad, also wrote to the Prime Minister regarding packaged food products.
The letter drew attention to an important contradiction facing India.
While the country continues to face problems related to malnutrition, excessive and unbalanced consumption of food is also contributing to illness and poor health.
The letter observed that when people eat traditional food at home, they have a better understanding of what they are consuming. With packaged foods, however, consumers may not easily understand how much energy, sugar, salt, fat or other nutrients they are actually consuming.
The appeal therefore called for stronger rules concerning the quality and packaging of packaged food, including prominent information that would allow consumers to understand the nutritional consequences of their choices.
The Right to Know What We Eat
The significance of these two letters goes beyond the organisations that issued them.
At the heart of both appeals was a fundamental consumer question:
Shouldn't people have the right to know what they are eating?
If a packaged food product contains excessive sugar, salt or saturated fat, this information should not be hidden in complicated nutritional tables or tiny print on the back of the package.
It should be visible, understandable and immediately accessible to the consumer.
This becomes even more important when children are involved.
Bright packaging, aggressive marketing and attractive food products can influence children's choices. Parents and young consumers therefore need simple and prominent information that helps them distinguish between healthier and less healthy options.
Why the Voice from Kashi Matters
Kashi is known across the world for its religious and cultural heritage. But it is also a city from which important social and humanitarian concerns have repeatedly emerged.
The two letters sent in September 2022 provide an interesting example of religious and social institutions raising a common public-health concern and asking the government to take policy action.
Their intervention demonstrated that the question of healthy food is not confined to nutrition experts, doctors or policymakers.
It concerns families, children, consumers, communities and society as a whole.
The message from Kashi was therefore remarkably simple:
People deserve clear information about the food they buy and consume.
From Consumer Information to Public Health
Front-of-Pack Labelling is important because consumers often make purchasing decisions within seconds.
A complicated nutrition table may provide information, but a clear front-of-pack warning can make an important difference by immediately drawing attention to products that contain excessive amounts of nutrients associated with health risks.
Such information does not take away an individual's freedom to choose.
Rather, it strengthens informed choice.
Consumers can make their own decisions—but they should be able to make those decisions with accurate and understandable information.
A Message That Remains Relevant
The letters from Kashi in September 2022 are now an important record of a broader public-health conversation in India.
They remind us that protecting health requires more than treating disease after it occurs.
It also requires creating an environment in which people can make healthier choices before illness develops.
For children and young people in particular, this means paying attention to the food environment surrounding them and ensuring that nutritional information is not hidden behind technical language or difficult-to-read labels.
The question raised from Kashi remains highly relevant:
Can a consumer understand, within a few seconds, whether the food they are buying contains excessive sugar, salt or fat?
If the answer is no, then there is still work to be done.
Healthy children. Informed consumers. A healthier India.
The voices raised by Vishva Hindu Parishad, Kashi Mahanagar, and Patalpuri Sanatan Dharm Raksha Parishad, Patalpuri Math, Varanasi, in September 2022 belong to this larger movement for a more transparent and health-conscious food system.
Kashi's message was clear: the right to know what we eat is an essential part of the right to make healthy choices.
