MPs Round-table:  Children Nutrition and Ultra-Processed food

 Peoples’ Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) and PIPAL successfully organized a MPs Round-table:  Children Nutrition and Ultra-Processed food on 20th March, 2023 in Deputy Speaker hall of Constitution Club of India, New Delhi. In the round table senior Members of Parliament, Politician and civil society representatives, called for urgent policy measures to make healthier foods available in the market and introduce clear warnings on packaged food to guide people’s choices.

The program started with the welcome speech through honoring the honorable guest with the handcrafted silk shawl and wooden musical items from weavers and artisan of Varanasi.

In the starting of the dialogue Dr Arun Gupta, MD, FIAP (Pediatrician) Convenor, Nutrition Advocacy in Public Interest (NAPi) did presentation on Burden of Obesity in India and Policy Options to Control it.



In the dialogue fact-sheet based on A survey study in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar  about Consumption Prevalence of Ultra-processed food items among rural poor and marginalized Households was released by the Members of Parliament, Politician and civil society representatives.



Ms. Shruti Nagvanshi, Convenor, Savitri Bai Phule Women Forum shared the highlighted of the study has revealed that India’s marginalised and economically weak are consuming high quantities of ultra-processed and packaged food. In a country that faces one of the world’s gravest double burden of malnutrition, the lowest income quintile has gone from facing hunger to relying on unhealthy snacks. This finding reinforces the concern that sub-optimal or poor nutrition is escalating diet related non communicable diseases (DR-NCDs) in India, putting at risk millions, particularly children across all socio-economic categories. 

In the session Supporting FOPL to safeguard Children Nutrition Right the senior Members of Parliament and Politician extended their support for the betterment of the health and nutrition of children: 

1.    Shri Sakal Deep Rajbhar, Member of Parliament – Rajya Sabha (Ballia, Uttar Pradesh) and Member, Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said, I will take this matter with the Government. Even in the meeting of the standing committee I raised the concern on FOPNL. All the Members of Parliament present in this hall will also raise this issue in the Parliament. So that the future of the country's children can be secured and the country can play a leading role”. 



  Dr. Ashok Bajpai, Member of Parliament – Rajya Sabha (Uttar Pradesh) and Member, Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said,  I will be where there is need. Like you people have made us aware. In the same way, keep creating awareness among other people”.

 

  Shri Imran Pratapgarhi, Member of Parliament – Rajya Sabha (Maharastra) , Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Member, Committee on Health and Family Welfare and Chairman, National Minority Department, AII India National Congress said, “In September, 2022 a delegation from PVCHR meet with him.  In winter session of the parliament he raised on the Health Attack and Sudden death https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ6FU4BU_Zc .  I will raise the issue on FOPL in the health standing committee and also in the parliament. Global intervention is necessary in this matter and all countries should be alert”.

4.    Shri B.P Saroj, Member of Parliament Machhlishahr  (Uttar Pradesh) and Member, Consultative Committee, Ministry of Food Processing Industries said, “we should promote that children should eat healthy food”. 

 

5.    Dr. Sanghmitra Maurya,  Member of Parliament –Badaun (Uttar Pradesh) and Member, Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare said, “I will always stand on this issue where it is needed”.

 

6.    Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, Member of Parliament – Aurangabad, (Bihar) and Committee on Petitions said, I will definitely help through a private bill in the Lok Sabha, by writing a letter to the government or keeping our views on this matter in the Parliament, if there is any other medium”.

 

    Shri Jagtap Kol,  son of Pakauri Kol, Member of Parliament – Roberstaganj (Uttar Pradesh) participated. 

8.    Ms. Netta D’Souza, President, All India Mahila Congress said, “Through frequent meeting and discussion on packed food now before purchasing the packed food I carefully read the ingredients in it.  I request all the honorable Member of Parliament to bring this issue in the parliament”.

 

    Shri Ashok Thakur, Director NAFED and incharge of Bhartiya Janta Party – New Delhi said, The government will have to fix the cost of production. Because the profit margin in this industry is unlimited”.

 Kamal Kishor Commando, Ex-Member of Parliament and senior leader of Indian National Congress said,  I request all the honorable Member of Parliament to bring this issue in the parliament.

 In the dialogue Mr. Rajesh Pratap Singh, ex-assistant director-Home Ministry, Dr. O P Vyas-Ex- joint registrar, NHRC, Mr. Asim Sanyal, COO, Consumer Voice, Pandit Vikash Maharaj, famous sarod maestro, Shri Varun Pathak, Chairman , Bench of Magistrates Child Welfare committee, Government of NCT of Delhi, Dr. Mohamamd Riyaz, National President, All India Congress Social organization, Adv. Nand Kishor, Sr Standing Counsel, Govt of India, Ms. Tarannum Khan, General Secretary,  Minority Department AICC, Shri Abdul Waris Qurashi, Chairman, Minority Department DPCC,  Shri Vikram Pandey Convenor, Indian Roti Bank and renowned activist from Badaun, Aligarh and Uttarkhand all together 76 participated in this dialogue.

Shri Pinkai Misra, Member of Parliament – Puri (Odisha) and member of standing committee on Finance sent apologies letter for not attending the program. 

Ms. Shirin Shabana Khan gave vote of thanks and program was moderated by PVCHR convenor Dr. Lenin Raghuvanshi.
